Paul Davis is primarily a post-damage recovery service. As such, the bulk of its services are focused on repairing a home that has been affected by fire, smoke, or some other form of disaster. On top of this, Paul Davis also has dedicated services for helping commercial properties following damage.
The services Paul Davis offers are:
For residential properties, Paul Davis provides a range of services, all based on the restoration of a home after some form of damage. Understandably this centers on damage after water or fire since these are the most common types of damage experienced by homeowners.
However, Paul Davis’ services are also ‘deeper’ than this, providing more advanced-level services in case of more severe damage.
The residential services offered are:
Paul Davis – unlike some other companies in the restoration industry – heavily trumpets its commercial cleaning credentials in its marketing materials. Generally, the commercial services a company offers are the same as the residential services, albeit on a larger scale.
However, Paul Davis also has dedicated services for private and government contractors. This marks Paul Davis as somewhat unique and suggests that a significant sector of its customers are non-residential entities.
This is a strong niche in which to expand and these services are certainly broader than many of its competitors. The services offered indicate that Paul Davis has extensive experience in these areas, which is more likely to draw in further customers from the commercial, industrial, or governmental sectors.
Commercial services on offer from Paul Davis are as follows:
On top of the residential and commercial services listed above, Paul Davis offers more comprehensive and ongoing services. In particular, it can provide services to help deal with the lasting effects of the damage listed above. While most of the cleanup is covered under residential or industrial services, there is also the option for the following from Paul Davis:
❏ Household goods and textile cleaning
Paul Davis’ growth as a company has seen extensive investment in training services. Paul Davis has a National Training Center, located in Jacksonville, Florida, where it trains all of its franchises in the latest techniques for mitigating different types of damage. Franchisees must complete this training as part of the process of becoming a franchisee, and they receive an IICRC-approved qualification for doing so. The key focus of this training is restoring property post-damage.
This training facility demonstrates that Paul Davis is interested in remaining at the cutting edge of its services to give it a competitive advantage. For example, its response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been directly correlated to the ongoing understanding of the pathogens involved. Because of the centralized training, Paul Davis is also able to control its operations and ensure that customers in Seattle get the same service as those in Houston.
RATINGS AND REVIEWS
BBB RATING: A+
The Better Business Bureau gave Paul Davis Restoration an A+ rating.
PROS AND CONS OF USING PAUL DAVIS
Damage restoration is a fairly competitive industry. As such, if you are to pick up the phone and call Paul Davis, you need to consider the strengths and weaknesses of the business – particularly if you have to make the decision under the stress of your home being damaged.
Paul Davis has a relatively unique business model, and this gives two key areas of strength compared with other companies in the marketplace.
The cons are also an offshoot of the strength of the business model as well.
On our five-point scale (below), we ranked Paul Davis as ‘Excellent.’
This was due to two main factors. Firstly, its staff is extremely well-trained, and therefore able to offer high levels of service. Secondly, the comprehensive nature of the service is also high.
Moreover, the affordable nature of the franchises means that the business supports entrepreneurs throughout North America. We think they are the best commercial water damage restoration service.
PAUL DAVIS HISTORY
Paul Davis was founded in 1966 in Jacksonville, Florida by Paul Woodall Davis. The company was initially an Insurance Restoration Contracting company, which was a fairly limited market. However, Davis realized that there was the potential for growth in the industry by targeting insurance adjusters. Davis worked closely with insurance companies and became a trusted partner; this led to quick growth in and around the Jacksonville area.
In 1969, Paul Davis began franchising. In the earliest years, Paul Davis (the founder) held a direct and central role – the original Operations Manual was written by him, and he taught franchisees in the Owners’ School. What marked Paul Davis (the company) as distinct was that employees were encouraged to attend the Owners’ School in order to better maintain the brand’s values. This is still at the heart of what Paul Davis does and it currently operates over 300 franchises throughout North America.
Paul Davis is owned by a parent company – First Service Corporation – which offers a range of domestic service options. Typically within the industry, the large parent corporation owns a number of complementary service businesses. In the case of Paul Davis, its owners also own businesses such as California Closets, Century Fire Protection, American Pool, and Planned Closets.
Each of these businesses operates in a slightly different market space, and, in the case of Paul Davis, is given a great deal of autonomy in its own day-to-day operations. The holding company offers little input into the direction of its operations, other than choosing its CEO, and as long as Paul Davis remains profitable, there is little to suggest that this will change.
First Service currently generates more than $1.1 billion in revenue per year, with more than 15,000 employees in the United States and Canada. First Service has subordinate voting shares that trade on the NASDAQ and the Toronto Stock Exchange with the symbol FSV.
HOW PAUL DAVIS OPERATES
BRANDING & BUSINESS MODEL
A big part of the Paul Davis branding is the comprehensive nature of its services. It also advertises its 50 years of heritage and how it has helped millions of customers during that time.
A secondary area of focus is the nature of the Paul Davis training and how that ensures that its operatives are experts in the field. All in all, Paul Davis focuses on being a reliable and solid operator, in juxtaposition with the chaos of the damage that it repairs.
Paul Davis operates exclusively as a franchise organization.
ULTIMATE SELLING POINT
Paul Davis has two key selling points. The first of these is the speed of the contact. They have a guarantee that one of its representatives will make contact within 30 minutes of a customer’s initial inquiry. This is true whether the inquiry is day or night, and gives it a major advantage over its rivals, particularly given that most of its customers call in the event of a disaster.
The second USP is the high standards to which its franchises are held. The ongoing training and the centralized nature of the intake for franchisees means that Paul Davis is able to exert high levels of pressure on its brand, to an extent rare within the industry.
ADDITIONAL OPERATIONAL INFORMATION
First Service, which owns Paul Davis, has a major portfolio of products, from Residential Communities to domestic services. As mentioned above, however, this does not impact on the day-to-day running of the company, nor does it affect the actual services provided, except for the fact that Paul Davis is unlikely to offer services in the future that compete with other First Service-owned companies.
Paul Davis grew from a company that targeted the insurance adjuster community to one that now works with all different types of customer – businesses, residents, and governmental bodies. Its growth has been driven by a few core values, namely that of investing in individuals and crafting a strong internal brand loyalty. Both of these dovetail to create a company that offers an extremely consistent service.
After all, for the customer, the knowledge that the company is good enough to provide services for government bodies and to pass insurance adjuster’s requirements, demonstrates competence and reliability that is enticing.
Ultimately, although post-disaster cleanup is not a topic that most home- or business owners like to think about, it is important when disaster does strike to have a reliable provider to call. In this instance, Paul Davis has more than 50 years of experience and is well placed to serve your needs efficiently, professionally, and affordably.fb
